Pride Guide 2001 GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE

Erie Picnic is a few weeks later, still at Presque Isle

by Michael K. Mahler

Erie, Pa.-Once again, the Pride Erie Picnic will be held at Presque Isle State Park at the Beach 11 Pavilion from 2 pm to sundown on Saturday, June 30.

Please note that this is not the usual weekend. Normally, the Pride Picnic has been the second Saturday in June, and this year it is the fifth.

Beach 11 is an uncrowded picnic and beach area. The beach is guarded. If you are not sure of where Beach 11 is, stop at the park's administration office (near Beach 6.) Also, signs will be posted throughout the park.

Hot dogs, hamburgers and beverages will be provided. Please bring a dish to pass. Paper plates and plastic silverware will be available. Donations will be gratefully accepted.

As always, straight friends and families are most heartily welcome. Feel free to bring your children or parents, but parents are responsible for taking care of their kids. There is playground equipment near the shelter.

Festivities begin at 2 pm with games, including the perennial favorite, volleyball. The

annual Family Portrait will be taken after we eat and anyone who wants to be in the picture can be or not, as they prefer. We will be including the picture on Erie Gay News' home page.

Last year's picture is at http:// www.eriegay news.com2000pride picnic.html.

Bring lawn chairs, blankets, Rollerblades and sunscreen. Volunteers are asked to help with clean up, cooking and set up. If you would like to volunteer, contact Michael Mahler at 814-456-9833 emailinfo@eriegaynews.com or Brian Skelly at 814-452-6228 or e-mail leelynn@velocity.net.

or

Because of state law, alcohol and sales by outside vendors are not permitted. Please respect this. If you bring alcohol, or are obviously drunk, you will be asked to leave the picnic.

Michael K. Mahler volunteers with the Pride Erie Picnic and is co-editor of the Erie Gay News.

Sing Out Toledo has a knack for adventure

by Jeff Woodard

Toledo Members of Sing Out Toledo are living proof that you don't need large numbers to have big fun. The mixed chorus is made up of 13 singers-and a knack for the adventurous.

For example, a couple weeks before Christmas, Sing Out embarked upon a day-long "progressive concert." Board member Marie Harkey said the group began its traveling entertainment show about noon, singing short sets at several venues including area homes, the Toledo Botanical Gardens, the Toledo Zoo and an AIDS benefit at the Lighthouse Cafe.

In January, Sing Out added international flavor by hosting a concert featuring the

Bowling Green State University Afro-Caribbean Drum Ensemble and dancers. “Bandari,” a piece performed in five movements, was among the performance's highlights.

Sing Out is preparing for its June 22 concert, "Through Womyn's Eyes"—one of the highlights of a weeklong artistic celebration of women at Maumee Valley Country Day School, 1715 S. Reynolds Rd., Toledo.

The concert will feature "Womyn's Song," a world premier by Sing Out conductor Wayne Anthony. The work includes five poems by Toledo poet and blues artist Laurie Swyers, dealing with key contemporary issues facing women. Tickets cost $10 in advance from any chorus member and at the door. Show time is 7:30 p.m. For more details, call 419381-1313.

All are invited to monthly Sandusky coffee gathering

by Ed Taylor

Sandusky, Ohio-In an effort to broaden the social options for gays and lesbians in Sandusky and the surrounding area, a small group of friends has organized what has come to be known as the Coffee House Gathering.

We meet one Friday each month at 7 pm at Coffee Temptations, 137 E. Water St. in downtown Sandusky. The "gathering" is simply an opportunity for gay and lesbian people to get together with friends or meet new ones in an informal, gay-friendly atmosphere.

5 S. Main

The invitation is open to all. Coffee Temptations offers a great menu; sandwiches, pastries, sodas, teas, juices, and of course, coffee. Turnout has been great so far, but there is always room for more.

The date will differ from month to month, due to other scheduled events, holidays, etc. To inquire about the next scheduled gathering, send e-mails to Sandusky Pride@aol.com, or call Ed at 419-627-0867, or Scott at 419-684-9360.

Ed Taylor is a member of Sandusky Pride.
